BCBSIL Announce Worksite Wellness Programs
By Mary Dynes, RHU, REBC, CDHC
Many brokers have been asking for suggestions on how you can assist your clients in their goal to give their employees tools to promote health. In response to that, BCBSIL has rolled out their Worksite Wellness Program initiative. Its goal is to “help your clients’ employees understand their current health status and how they might benefit from lifestyle improvements” (from the January, 2008 issue of In The Know).
The program offers great on-site events for your groups that have 51+ people on the medical plan. Your client has the option of selecting two events in a given year that include health fair(s) and health education classes. The fairs offer single health screenings and informational pieces on the various wellness topics. The health education classes let the group choose one of several topics including presentations on stress, family health, fitness, heart health, tobacco cessation, and nutrition. BCBSIL will sponsor up to two events per year at no charge to the group. In addition, should the group desire, they can purchase additional services that include a package of screenings (blood pressure, BMI, cholesterol, glucose and personal coaching), flu vaccines and additional health fairs, webinars or health education classes.
For those of you with groups of 50 lives or less, there are no health fairs or classes. However, BCBSIL has designed a series of Wellness communication pieces that a group can use as a campaign with posters, fliers, paycheck stuffers and e-mail messages. There are eight topics, and each topic has a choice of from at least 25 different communication pieces that the group can print off in their offices or order through the stock room. In almost every case, the piece is available in both English and Spanish. Topics include weight loss, preventative health, and job health, and there are also a series of monthly webinars that are available to the group.
Whether your group is large or small, this is a definite positive step that you can offer your groups on their road to wellness.
